最初に、船の図鑑を参考にしながら、パニックになって逃げる人々や、沈みゆく船からジャックとローズが逃げる場面などを表現することを考えました。しかし、このプロジェクトには「人間の姿を使ってわいけない」というルールがあったため、人物を描かずに物語を象徴的に伝える方法を模索しました。
その結果、ジャック＝タバコ、煙、ローズ＝氷 という象徴表現のアイデアにたどりつきました。タバコの煙は、自由奔放で柔軟なジャックの性格を、そして氷はローズの育ちの良さや美しさ、繊細さを象徴しています。
さらに、倒れたカップからこぼれ落ちる氷を描くことで、タイタニックが揺れた直後の混乱を表現しようとしました。また、カップから飛び出す氷を「自由へ向かうローズ」の象徴として描く案も考え、二人の関係性や物語の雰囲気を、象徴のみで伝えられるデザインを目指しました。
At first, I looked through ship encyclopedias for inspiration and considered illustrating scenes such as people panicking or Jack and Rose escaping from the sinking ship. However, this project had a strict rule: no human figures were allowed. Because of that, I needed to find a symbolic way to express the story without depicting any people.
This led me to the idea of representing Jack with a cigarette and Rose with ice. The drifting cigarette smoke symbolizes Jack’s free-spirited and flexible personality, while the ice represents Rose’s elegance, beauty, and delicate nature.
I also explored visual metaphors, such as ice spilling from a fallen cup to represent the chaos that followed the Titanic’s impact. Another idea was to show the ice bursting out of the cup as a symbol of Rose breaking free. Through these symbolic elements, I aimed to capture the atmosphere of the story and the relationship between the two characters.
最終的なデザインは、当初「氷」と「タバコ」の2つを使って人を象徴的に表す予定でした。しかし、よりシンプルで力強い表現にしたいと思い、タバコは使わないことにしました。
カップの中の“氷”は、タイタニックの悲劇を引き起こした氷山の前兆を象徴すると同時に、事故が起こる前に人々がお酒を楽しんでいた日常も表しています。
つまり、ひとつの氷で「事件前の穏やかな時間」と「避けられない運命の予告」という二つの側面を表現しようとしたデザインです。
Originally, I planned to use both ice and a cigarette to symbolically represent people.
But I realized the design would be stronger if it were more simple, so I decided to remove the cigarette.
The ice inside the cup symbolizes the omen of the Titanic’s tragic collision with the iceberg, while also representing the ordinary moments before the disaster, when people were enjoying drinks and relaxing. In other words, a single piece of ice carries two meanings: the everyday life before the incident and the subtle prediction of what is about to happen.
Ultimately, I aimed for a clean and symbolic design that conveys the foreshadowing of the Titanic in a simple yet meaningful way.

はじめて受けたグラフィックデザインのクラスで制作した本の表紙です。このプロジェクト
では、歴史上の有名な2組のカップルをテーマにブックカバーをデザインしました。
Design a book cover based on two famous couples in history
Titanic
For the book cover, I chose the fictional couple Jack and Rose from Titanic. Jack Dawson is a poor artist with a free-spirited and adventurous personality who wins a third-class ticket on the Titanic, a luxury cruise ship. Rose DeWitt Bukater is a wealthy young woman from an aristocratic family who feels trapped by the expectations of her privileged life. Their love story is emotional and tragic—Jack sacrifices his life so Rose can survive. I focused on showing Jack’s freedom and Rose’s longing to escape, along with the sorrow of their separation.タイタニック
のプロジェクトには「有名なカップルをテーマにしたブックカバーを作る」という課題があり、ペンギンブックスのスタイルに合わせて、使用できる色はオレンジ・黒・白の3色に限定されていました。その限られた条件の中で、選んだカップルの魅力をどう表現するか、自分の想像力を活かして取り組みました。この本の表紙を制作するプロジェクトでは、テーマとして映画『タイタニック』に登場するフィクションカップルのジャックとローズを選びました。ジャック・ドーソンは自由奔放で冒険心にあふれた貧しい画家で、偶然手に入れた三等客室のチケットで豪華客船タイタニック号に乗船します。一方、ローズ・デウィット・ブケイターは上流階級の裕福な家庭に育った若い女性で、恵まれた生活の裏で、周囲からの期待に縛られ息苦しさを感じています。
2人の恋物語は情熱的でありながら悲劇的で、最終的にジャックはローズを守るために命を犠牲にします。デザインでは、ジャックの自由さ、ローズの解放への思い、そして2人の別れの悲しみを表現することを大切にしました。
